Though hate is such a strong word, I think I can safely say that I hate the word "whatever". Used inappropriately, it can come across like a flippant dismissal of what has just been said. Wars have been started over less....

    I do believe that is the intended effect most times - a flippant dismissal.

    Like most word fads, it will pass.

    you make it sound permissible when you say, 'it can come across'
    it is as intentional & as rude as can be, used esp by sour losers

    in other words;
    'keep talking'
    'good riddance'
    'you can go on forever, see if i care'

    & as far as i'm concerned, only idiots use it in conversations
